Several news outlets reported on a large crowd that threw beer bottles and snowballs at police and destroyed a light pole in Canal Park after the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs won the Frozen Four hockey championship game. None of the outlets called this a “riot,” and the participants were not charged by police with rioting or inciting a riot.

IMPACT: the community saw how police and other community members talked about and addressed this incident. They saw an event associated primarily with white folks treated completely differently than events associated with people of color. This demonstrates the concerns people had expressed about how police will treat protesters and people of color come to life.

Duluth (In)Action is a platform to ultimately abolish the system of policing in Duluth and shift the culture of accountability. We are a group of Duluth citizens shedding light on the current practices of our city and DPD, hoping to ultimately change the way we think about policing and safety. We also hope this work can be used by activists and organizers as a political education tool for communities.
