The city of Duluth released a notice (html version, pdf version) of a public meeting for the “police policy working group to present protective gear policy to DPD at public meeting.” The policy is being presented with little notice (11 days from when the press release was posted on the city’s website) and without an open period of public comment. It was also unclear from the announcement whether the public will be able to provide input to the policy at the public meeting.

The proposed policy falls short or is unclear in several areas, which Duluth InAction will be highlighting via social media over the next week.

IMPACT: the community was yet again left with little notice of an important city decision, and the city of Duluth has yet again failed to be clear about what input citizens can give. Additionally, there are ongoing questions about how the working group was structured, whose voices were heard, and how the entire process worked.

Duluth (In)Action is a platform to ultimately abolish the system of policing in Duluth and shift the culture of accountability. We are a group of Duluth citizens shedding light on the current practices of our city and DPD, hoping to ultimately change the way we think about policing and safety. We also hope this work can be used by activists and organizers as a political education tool for communities.
