Mayor Emily Larson writes a post on social media about the need for “civility”.

IMPACT: Civility is coded language for “respectability,” which is a staple of white supremacy culture. It has been used as a tool against marginalized communities on an ongoing basis, and this example is no different.

In our current white supremacist culture, we value “politeness” and are afraid of open conflict. Additionally, this commentary from the City of Duluth continues narrative that this process was fine and that the protesters were the ones who disrupted public engagement. Finally, it demonstrates how disengaged the Mayor has been throughout the process.

Duluth (In)Action is a platform to ultimately abolish the system of policing in Duluth and shift the culture of accountability. We are a group of Duluth citizens shedding light on the current practices of our city and DPD, hoping to ultimately change the way we think about policing and safety. We also hope this work can be used by activists and organizers as a political education tool for communities.
